Avengers: Doomsday, explained

Avengers: Doomsday is an upcoming Marvel Studios superhero film - the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the story Marvel says picks up directly from Avengers: Endgame (2019). Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, it collides heroes from three universes against a single foe: Victor von Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. in a brand-new role.

Premise

Marvel's official synopsis reads: “Avengers: Doomsday follows beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they're set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered.” Confirmed

Reporting on the film fills in the shape of that premise Reported: roughly fourteen months after the events of Thunderbolts* (2025), three groups converge - the Avengers, Wakandans, and New Avengers of the mainline MCU (Earth-616); the Fantastic Four from their own universe (Earth-828); and an “original” X-Men team from a separate universe - all forced together to face Doom. Marvel has not published Doom's specific motivations, so anything about his plan stays firmly in the rumor and theory column.

From Kang to Doom: how we got here

Doomsday didn't start life as a Doctor Doom movie. The road here is one of the more dramatic behind-the-scenes stories in recent Marvel history - and all of it is confirmed. Confirmed

• July 2022: At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announces Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (May 2, 2025) and Avengers: Secret Wars to close “The Multiverse Saga” (Phases Four–Six), with Jonathan Majors' Kang as the saga villain.
• Late 2023: Director Destin Daniel Cretton departs The Kang Dynasty; Michael Waldron comes aboard as writer; Marvel begins moving away from Kang amid Majors' legal issues.
• December 2023: Majors is dropped by Marvel following a guilty verdict. Internally the film is “Avengers 5.”
• Early–mid 2024: The films are retooled to reduce or remove Kang; Marvel approaches Robert Downey Jr.
• July 2024 (SDCC): The Russo brothers are confirmed to direct both films; the movie is retitled Avengers: Doomsday; and Downey is unveiled as Doctor Doom.

Production designer Gavin Bocquet has said roughly 80% of interior set backdrops were built practically rather than added as visual effects - a notable choice for a film of this scale. Reported

The villain: Doctor Doom

Casting Downey - the MCU's original Iron Man - as its “most iconic villain” is the film's central hook. Kevin Feige's reasoning was blunt: “He played the most iconic hero. The campaign has been an event in itself: a ~5.5-hour cast-reveal livestream in March 2025 (275 million views in 24 hours), four teasers between December 2025 and January 2026 that together passed 1 billion views in three days, and a full trailer released online on July 20, 2026 that hit 503 million views in 24 hours - the second-biggest trailer launch on record. Release, IMAX & formats

Doomsday opens in 4,000+ U.S. theaters but, notably, without U.S. IMAX for its first few weeks - Dune: Part Three holds that exclusivity on the shared December 18 date. Disney answered with a new premium-format certification, “Infinity Vision.” Advance premium tickets pulled in a reported $16.5 million in their first 24 hours. What comes next

Doomsday is the first half of a two-film finale. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027, from the same writers and directors, drawing on the 1984–85 and 2015–16 Secret Wars comic events. Together the two films conclude Phase Six and the Multiverse Saga. Confirmed
